D Hicaz (Hijaz)

Middle Eastern & Turkish Makams / Maqams

Hicaz tetrachord + Rast pentachord; the best-known Turkish makam. The 6th usually drops when descending. Arabic Hijaz uses a ♭6 (= Phrygian Dominant).

Makams use intervals smaller than a fret (komas, quarter tones) and are defined as much by their seyir (melodic path) as by their notes. Shown here is the nearest 12-tone, fretted approximation, so some makams land on the same notes.
