Speed Bottleneck Diagnostic
If you "hit a wall" at a certain tempo, the cause is almost always unwanted tension or inefficient motion. Film yourself for 60 seconds at the tempo where you get stuck, watch it in slow motion and tick the list below. Every ticked item is a practice target.
Fretting hand
Picking hand
Body and sync
| Finding | Prescription |
|---|---|
| Flying fingers | Play very slowly (40–50 BPM), keep fingers "hovering" over the strings. Use a mirror. |
| Big pick motion | Use only the tip; practise tremolo picking with a 2 mm motion on one string. |
| Escape problem | Isolate one string change (e.g. 2 notes on B + 2 on e) and fix your pick slant. |
| Sync problem | Halve the tempo and focus on both hands landing "together" with exaggerated accents; speed up gradually. |
| Tension / breath | Every 4 bars, deliberately drop your shoulders and exhale. Tension is a habit — so is letting go. |
Custom Practice Routine Builder
A good routine balances three things: warm-up, technical maintenance and creative time. Fill in the templates below for your goals and track them in the practice log.
| Block | 30 min | 60 min | Examples |
|---|---|---|---|
| Warm-up | 5 | 8 | Chromatic 1-2-3-4, stretches, slow legato |
| Technique | 10 | 20 | One weak spot from the diagnostic; metronome, measurable goal |
| Knowledge/theory | 5 | 10 | Fretboard notes, CAGED, a new mode, ear training |
| Repertoire | 5 | 12 | Songs you know, top to bottom, without stopping for mistakes |
| Creative | 5 | 10 | Improvising, writing riffs, recording |
Building your own routine
- Set a goal: not "better solos" but "clean 16ths through pentatonic Box 1 at 100 BPM".
- Measure: write down your starting tempo and the date.
- Cycle: plan 4-week blocks with at most 2 technical goals each.
- Review: record yourself every weekend and compare with last week.
- Rest: one day a week for listening or playing purely for fun.
Use a timer: when a block ends, move on whether you like it or not. That way you won't spend the whole session on your favourite thing and neglect the rest.
